History of Salt Therapy

A black and white photo of a rustic indoor scene with a tree trunk on the right, curtains on the left, a sofa on the left, a dining table with chairs in the center, and a textured wall with visible electrical wiring in the background.

European salt miners working in the caves noticed that their lungs felt healthier and respiratory issues improved while spending time underground. By the 19th century, this observation led to the creation of hospital wards inside salt mines, where patients could benefit from the clean, mineral-rich air. These early “salt clinics” laid the foundation for modern halotherapy, inspiring the salt rooms and inhalation therapies we use today.

How does it work?

Modern salt therapy uses a device called a halogenerator to recreate the naturally therapeutic environment once found deep in European salt caves. The halogenerator grinds pharmaceutical-grade dry salt into ultra-fine particles and gently releases them into the air of the room.

As you relax and breathe normally, these tiny particles get to work:

  • Deep lung support: The dry salt travels into the respiratory system, where it helps loosen mucus, clear congestion, and reduce inflammation.

  • Airway cleansing: Salt can draw out excess moisture, helping to clear the airways and remove irritants, pollutants, and allergens.

  • Skin benefits: The fine salt particles can help calm irritation, reduce redness, and support the skin’s natural barrier.

  • Naturally sterile environment: Salt itself is antimicrobial, so the air in the room remains clean and soothing throughout your session.

FAQ

  • Most sessions run for 45 minutes, allowing enough time for the salt to circulate through the room. You can choose to do 30 minutes if you prefer

  • Salt therapy is gentle and non-invasive. Many families choose it during periods of congestion or seasonal allergies. We reduce the salt concentration in the room to account for smaller lungs. Always check with your doctor for individual advice

  • Light, comfortable clothing is perfect. The room stays dry, so no special clothing is needed. The salt needs to land on the skin to assist with skin conditions, so consider clothing that will allow exposure to the air

  • Some clients come weekly for general wellbeing, while others visit more frequently during allergy or cold seasons. We recommend 1-3 times a week with most people starting to notice a difference after around 3 session.

  • Absolutely (but check with your medical team if you have any underlying health issues) - Salt is a natural way to find relief from respiratory issues without medication
